I don’t think that either of them has transformed into human shapes in each other’s presence before. Before Bernard transforms for the first time, Hadrian is not even sure what an adult human looks like. He must have made up this shape on the spur of the moment (that, or they just “have” a certain human shape even if they’ve never changed into it).
